Every single thing you see in this picture was intended for me, and only me, to eat.
I crossed the border last night from Rajasthan to Gujarat (Ahmedabad, to be specific) and thus had my first Gujarati thali at Agashiye, an amaazing rooftop restaurant.
A thali is a big round plate (seen above) filled with tons (and tonss) of dishes; the surrounding plates were the accompanying chutneys, sauces, butter, etc. Every state in India serves a variation of thali consisting of their unique regional cuisine. Last night’s was by far my favorite: pickled vegetables, rice and kadhi, mango chutney, pista basundi and these incredible apple fritter thingies called jalebis…as you can see, I’m finally starting to get into Indian food. It helps that I sort of love eating with my hands and am always expected to finish my plate, lest I be considered rude.
Last night I was quite polite and ridiculously, insanely full.
